Nameri National Park is birder’s paradise and more than 300 species of birds have been identified here- four species of horn-bills, an abundance of Manas Bee Eaters, Barbets, Babblers, Bulbuls, Plovers, Ibisbills etc.

Manas is one of the nine tiger reserve sanctuaries in India. Tigers are however are not only wildlife to be found here. Manas has its own peculiar faunal features the rarest species of which are Hispid hare, pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Buffalo etc.

In recent years Nameri has becomes famous because of the rare and endangered White Winged Wood Duck. The world population is estimated at around 700. Above 50 of these resident birds is found in the park. A plethora of reptilian and insects life bare testimony to the immense biodiversity of the area. Assam Roof Turtle, multicolored butterflies and insects like Lantern fly are a common sight adding color and charm to the scenery.

On a clear winter morning one can see the snow capped peaks of eastern Himalayas as a backdrop. The Forest Department regulates angling and accords permission to angling members on a select stretch of the river, strictly on a catch record and release basis. The other sporting species of fish found in the Bhoroli River. The best spots for angling are approached by rubber rafts and the most favorable time for angling is November and February /March .

HOW TO REACH:

By Air: The nearest airport Guwahati ( 200 km)is connected with regular flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rangapara which is 81 km. from the park in the Sonitpur district.

By Road: Tere is regular buses shuttle to and from Tezpur. Tezpur is very well connected to all major cities.

What to See Here

Nameri is excellent elephant country and ideal habitat for a host of other animals including the tiger. The park is the second tiger reserve of Assam. It is also home to the Leopard, Bison Sambar, Hog Deer , Wild Boar, Wild Dog (Dhole), Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Capped Langur, Malayan Giant Squirrel, and also the endangered small mammal-the Hispid hare. Traditionally, Nameri is know all over for its Golden Mahseer. The snow fed Jia Bhoroli river flows along the southern periphery of the park adding to the breathtaking scenery.

Best Time

The best time of the year to visit the Nameri National Park is from November to March. The winter months are pleasant during the day and the weather is normally dry, except for the rains during October and April. Assam can also get extremely cold and temperatures drop to single digits in December and April.

Vegetation

Nameri National Park, located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, straddles the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Located 181 km. from Guwahati, it is just the place for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers with its breathtaking natural beauty and diverse flora and fauna. Nameri is famous due to its amazing richness of natural wealth – exotic orchids, dense evergreen forests, a constant background orchestra of bird song.

Full Day Activity

Enjoy Elephant Safari conducted by the wildlife department & boat rides on the Jia Bhoroli river. Trekking inside thePark is a unique experience but must visitors must be accompanied by an experienced forest guard. A birding visit to Nameri National Park alone would require at least two days. A visit to the nearby tea estates could be interesting. The Bhoroli river is fast flowing and is full of exciting rapids. The Eco-Camp organises rafting trips on rubber rafts, and provides experienced rafting guides on a 20 km. stretch of the Bhoroli river. Rafting is thus an exciting way to see the Nameri National Park, as animals are often seen drinking water by the river.

The river rafting is allowed in south east of the park on river-The rafting usually starts 13 km upstream and takes about 3 hours to complete without halts.
